Yeah and how much OT IS that to get to $ 45k?

Exactly. That sounds pretty awful if the base is more like $30k. Wayyyy too many damn hours.

$45k for that many hours, in California...

Agricultural workers used to not even be eligible for time and a half in CA. Still true for other parts of the country.

Jeez that’s ridiculous.
Note to self - don’t underestimate the farm lobby.

Did the math on this and you only need to work 840 hrs of overtime per year to make 45k at $ 13.50/hr that’s only a little over 16 hrs a week of OT . So you could work 365 days in a year and barely have to average over 8hrs a day. I would say these facts make this a pretty shit job. Oh and you have to constantly switch from day to night shift that’s a great benefit.

$13.50/hour comes out to $28,080/year working a 40 hour week.
If they pay time and a half for OT, you would have to work 16 hours of OT per week to reach $45,000/year. So effectively, you’d work 8 hours a day, every single day, for an entire year with no time off for weekends or holidays just to almost hit that mark before taxes .
As much as I love milk, I think I’ll just keep my current job. Good looking out though!

I wonder how much an attorney representing the milkers makes? Hmmm.

No way I’d teach for 56 hours a week, every week, for $45k a year.
[thinks about how much time I spend at home writing lesson plans and grading papers]
Shit.
For real though, you’re gonna have to bust your ass for that $45k. At least they get time and a half now.

For all y’all talking about the hours needed to earn $45K/yr, welcome to farming. This time of year Mrs. Boost and I literally work dawn to dusk. That’s ~6am to ~8pm... 14 hour days. Our small farm nets about ~35K/yr.

Holstein cows are the cool kids of the cow world.
My family had a small dairy farm for a few years when I was a kid. It was fun then, but I wouldn’t want to do it now.

It’s way harder to milk the wheat than it is a cow, though

I’m not sure many of the farms in the area where I grew u p could pay a farmhand $45k today . There is probably still a heavy reliance on help from their kids and an occasional part-time high schooler .

I should get a paying job but I’m too lazy to be a proper farmer. The dairy in the city a couple of hours south of here is hiring...
AU$70k to $90k per annum.
The milk price in California is set by the State? Really?! That’s... unusual in this day and age.

That’s honestly not that bad for somebody that can manage their finances.
According to my math, that will work out to $2.5 - $3k / month after taxes. That’s..... about the same as somebody with a $70k job and $1k / month in debt payments from credit cards / student loans / etc.
Plus you get to deal with cows instead of people.

If housing is included (and an assumed short commute), probably not the worst thing in the world. Lots of hours though.
